Jono Brauer update October 2008
The last training camp for the off-season was held over three weeks in La Parva and Valle Nevado, Chile. With blue bird days and bullet proof snow the training was phenomenal. The resorts were more than accomodating, providing us with downhill, super-g and gs training for up to 5 hours each day. With the resorts of Chile being high in the Andes, we were living at approximately 3000 meters and training from above 3500 meters. With the downhill and super-g courses being up to 1 min 25 secs long at 3500 meters, it's needless to say it was a tiring trip. We spent the weekends in Santiago to rest and recover at low altitude and managed to find ourselves a Stationary wave pool which saw us getting 10 foot barrels in the middle of the city, but not getting as much rest as the coaches would have liked. My knee held up really well and i was skiing double sessions on snow most days. We now have a month off to train in the gym and work on fitness before starting skiing again in Canada on the 9th November in preperation for the first speed World Cup Events in Lake Louise Canada on the 29/30th of November.
Thanks for checking in and be sure to check out some training footage from Chile "summer training 08" in the media section of my website.
Cheers, Jono.
Team: Skiing Australia has signed an agreement with the British Ski team that involves Craig and I working with the British Team up until the 2010 Olympics.
This entails the two of us being incorporated into their team as one of their own. We utilize all of their staff and facilities including ski coaching, physical coaching, physiotherapy, ski technicians and the use of their European house in Lofer, Austria complete with training hill and gym facilities. This of course comes at a cost of approx $45,000 -$50,000 AUD. For this kind of support you need hundreds of thousands of dollars and there is no chance of Skiing Australia/OWI providing such a program, so I feel lucky to have this opportunity.
Equipment: I have signed a contract with Head up until the end of the 2010 season. Unfortunately due to season ending injuries the past two years the contract has reduced to minimal fixed pay although I am certain to be very well looked after with the best skis and boots available.
Plan: The first plan of attack is to become 100% fit and pain free. At the moment my knee is approximately at 80% health. I have been working hard with the Physios in Thredbo as well as the AIS and progress is coming along very well. All parties concerned are confident of a full recovery by the start of the Northern Hemisphere season. On Monday I am departing to Chile for a training camp with the British team predominantly focusing on Downhill and Super G. This will give my knee an opportunity to continue to recover whilst giving me the opportunity to get some quality training also.
Craig and I will be training and traveling full time with the British team over the entire Northern winter. As of yet my focus is not 100% confirmed as I must wait and see what happens with my knee. However I believe that with a full recovery my focus will be on the combined events and also Slalom. If however my knee does not agree with Slalom for this season (as slalom is far more painful) I am more than confident that I will be able to attack the Downhill tour and make a serious impact as the pressures on my knee are far less and myself and my coaches believe I have a great opportunity in the speed disciplines. My goals for the 2009 season are to be ranked in the top 15 in Super Combined and top 30 in Slalom and/or Downhill. Season 2010 my goals are to be ranked in the top 5 in Super combined and Top 15 in Slalom/Downhill leading into the Olympics with the focus on a medal in Vancouver.
Post 2010 I will sit down and re-evaluate my goals. I do wish to continue skiing up until the 2014 Olympics and even the 2018 Olympics. I know this is an ambitious goal although one I think I am capable of achieving.
